Dr. Carl L. Wilhelm

Dr. Carl L. Wilhelm was born in Appleton, Wisconsin in 1921 and died in Macon, Georgia on Friday, December 28, 2012. Funeral services will be at 2:00PM on Monday, December 31, 2012 at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer with the Reverend Dr. Jim C. Braswell officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Park Cemetery in Greenfield, Wisconsin. The family will greet friends on Sunday, December 30, from 5 until 7 PM at Hart's at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 390 Pierce Avenue, Macon, Georgia 31204. Dr. Wilhelm graduated from East Green Bay High School in Wisconsin in 1939 and Marquette University Dental School, 1944. After serving in the United States Navy during World War II he returned to his practice of general dentistry in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was on the dental school faculty as an instructor in clinical operative dentistry and head of the pre-clinical operative dentistry technical courses. Dr. Wilhelm also served as a dental anesthetist at the health department for the city of Milwaukee. He was later recalled to active duty in the Navy for the Korean War and after a long military career he retired in 1973. While serving in the military he had the privilege to be stationed at many locations. He served at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center and as an instructor at the Dental Technicians School. He also served as the dental officer and department head at the Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, Georgia. While stationed at the Commander Fleet Air Naval Station in Jacksonville, Florida he served as the prosthetic officer, dental officer, department head, as well as the staff dental officer. While at his assignment at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida he served as the prosthetic officer. Dr. Wilhelm was the first department head and dental officer in the construction phase, commissioning and duty on the USS Ranger CVA-61 and later served in the same position aboard the USS Enterprise CVA(N)65. While stationed in Naples, Italy, he served as not only the staff dental officer at the U.S. Navy Hospital but also as the staff dental officer for the Commander Fleet Air Mediterranean. Upon retirement, he became the director of the Dental Hygiene program at Macon Junior College, Macon, Georgia. Later he returned to private practice for many years, after which he closed his practice and became a dental consultant for the Aetna Life Insurance Company. During Dr. Wilhelm's military career he was presented with many medals for his service; the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Expedition Medal, the Armed Forces Expedition Medal for service during the Cuban Blockade, the American Defense Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the National Defense Medal with star. Dr. Wilhelm was a life member of the American and Georgia Dental Associations, the American Legion, the Retired Officers Association, the Navy League, and the Fleet Reserve Association. He was a Mason and a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer congregation. He was predeceased by his parents, Louis Wilhelm and Clara Foesch Wilhelm; daughter, Judith Curl; and brother, Earl Wilhelm. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Fay Tonnsen Wilhelm of Macon, Georgia; daughter, Janet Lundberg of Maryland; grandchildren, Scott Curl and wife Angie of West Virginia, Sandy Curl of Florida, Christopher Lundberg of Maryland, Todd Lundberg of Maryland, and Tammy Lundberg of Maryland; great grandchildren, Bradley Lundberg, Shannen Lundberg, Addison Curl, and Trenton Campbell; and 3 nephews.
