Capt. Spencer, a resident of Carlyle Place in Macon, died Monday, July 9, 2012. He was 95 years old. A memorial service will be held at Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Sanford, Florida, on Monday, July 16, 2012 at 10:00AM with burial in the Holy Cross Memorial Garden. Capt. Spencer was born and raised in Richmond, VA. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD and graduated with the class of 1939. He was at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked on December 7, 1941. He subsequently commanded combat ships in the Atlantic and Pacific theatres during World War II, and later in the Korean conflict. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1965 to become commandant of the Sanford Naval Academy, a boys' military preparatory school in Sanford, Florida. After his wife of 62 years predeceased him in 2002, he moved to Macon in 2004 to be near his two daughters. He is survived by his daughters, Ann "Tracy" Chandler (Robin) of Thomaston, GA, and Jane Miller (Steve) of Decatur, GA, and three grandsons, Rob Chandler, Alex Miller and Jesse Miller.
