Bobby Herbert Mills, 76, of Macon, Georgia went to his forever home in heaven on Sunday, July 21, 2024.
Born in Perry, Georgia on November 19, 1947 to Herbert and Velma Mills, Bobby grew up in Perry and graduated from Perry High School in 1965. After high school, he attended Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, Georgia.
On December 9, 1967, Bobby married the love of his life, the former Elizabeth Sue Giles. Their life together was an incredible love story. Bobby and Sue were truly best friends and partners in life. Their motto, “Always hold hands and stick together” was lived out every day. For the 54 years of their marriage, they called Macon their home.
Bobby spent most of his career working for the Southern Natural Gas Company (SONAT) as a shift operator, serving with the company for nearly 35 years until his retirement. He also proudly served for six years in the 121st infantry of the Army National Guard, qualifying as a sharpshooter with the M1, M14, and M16 rifles as well as the 45 caliber pistol.
For most of their lives, Bobby and Sue were avid tennis players, cyclists, and runners. One of Bobby’s proudest moments was claiming the title of “first employee” in the 10K SONAT Vulcan Run in Birmingham, Alabama in 1984. Bobby also enjoyed driving motorcycles, and for 20 years owned and drove several different cycles.
Bobby and Sue loved to travel and spent many years getting their passports stamped in foreign nations. Together they visited over fifty different countries. Among their favorites was a trip to Egypt, Jordan, and Israel, where they were able to view the land of the Exodus and the significant sites of the Holy Land.
One of his greatest joys in life was being “Grandbuddy” to his four grandchildren. He loved to spend time watching their sporting and other extracurricular activities. As well, he was always quick to share with them a pithy saying or word of wisdom. “There’s many a slip between the cup and the lip,” “A penny saved is a penny earned,” and “Better safe than sorry,” were oft-repeated phrases. Typically, this advice was completely unrelated to the activity of the moment; however, he felt it was worthwhile for them to hear and absorb.
Most importantly, Bobby was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. He accepted Christ at the age of eight while attending a revival at the First Presbyterian Church in Perry. When he and Sue moved to Macon, they joined Northminster Presbyterian Church, and in 1989 joined Vineville Baptist Church. For the last 17 years, Bobby has been a member of Northway Church in Macon. For many years, he and Sue faithfully served in the Preschool Ministry and were active members of a Connection Class and Home Team. Bobby dearly loved his church family and spent his last full day on this earth traveling to Atlanta to celebrate a birthday with some of these wonderful friends.
After the passing of his wife, Sue, in 2022, Bobby moved to Carlyle Place in Macon. There, he found a wonderful community of kind and loving individuals. He often commented on how much his neighbors meant to him and how he thoroughly enjoyed their many meals together in the “lunchroom.”
Bobby is survived by his two sons, Kevin (Katie) and Aaron of Macon; his four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Ryan, Charlie, and Maya, of Macon; and his niece, Tammy O’Hara of St. Louis, Missouri.
A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, July 28 at 2 PM at Northway Church, with the Reverend Phil Anderson and the Reverend Joe McDaniel officiating. The family will greet friends immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made in his memory to the Faith for the Future Fund at Northway Church.
