Beverly Bowden Pickard

March 29, 1938 — December 31, 2018

Beverly Pickard was born in Memphis, Tennessee to Julia Preston (Hood) and George Thomas Bowden on March 29, 1938. She died peacefully at home on December 31, 2018, one week after her beloved husband, Carey Owen Pickard, Jr. An artist from a young age, Beverly’s talent was nurtured by her parents. She spent summers studying art in Burnsville, NC and later made western North Carolina her home.

Beverly was a part of the Training School community and then attended Southwestern at Memphis. She received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of South Carolina and her Master of Life Sciences in Marriage and Family Therapy from Mercer University. She was a medical educator who taught family therapy and medical students at the Mercer University School of Medicine. As a faculty member of the medical school, she created the standardized patient program which continues to thrive today.

Beverly and her first husband, John Templeton, had three children together. In the early years of their marriage, she was “Miss Beverly” on the children’s television show, Romper Room. The family lived in Pawley’s Island, SC for several years where Beverly continued her own education, opened a dress shop with a friend, and entered a new phase for artistic expression. In Macon, GA, she was involved in Macon’s Community Theatre.

In 1991, Beverly married Carey Owen Pickard, Jr. and began a new chapter in her life. After their retirement, Carey and Beverly moved from Macon to Saluda, NC where they opened Saluda Fine Arts as a place to showcase Beverly’s art and that of other regional artists. She later joined the “Claydies” in Tryon, NC with whom she continued to create art for several years.

Beverly taught art throughout her life and was an accomplished painter, sculptor, and poet. She knew the vital role of creativity in life and throughout her own experience with aging and memory loss, spoke frequently of the importance of art as a way to grow. As her dementia progressed, Beverly continued to make art through her drawings, sculptures, and increasingly through poetry and rhyme. With her husband’s devoted care, Beverly had many years of enjoyment for which her children are deeply grateful.

The family would like to express appreciation to the team from Pine Pointe Hospice and the aides from Interim HealthCare who, during her last months, provided beautiful care for her in her home.

Beverly is survived by her children Anne Isaac, Bowden Templeton (Debbie), and Ginna Templeton (Steve); her grandchildren Julia Pol (Nickie), Zac (Alley), Ben (Vanessa), Davis, Matt, Joseph and Louise; and, her great-grandchildren River, Eloise, and Cosmo. She is also survived by her step-children Carey Pickard III (Chris) and Lizzie Cogan (Daniel).

The family will receive visitors from 5pm to 7pm on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at 1005 College Street in Macon. A memorial service will be held at 3pm on Friday, January 4, 2019 at Mill Hill Community Art Center, 213 Clinton Street, Macon, GA.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in Beverly’s name can be made to MemoryCare at 100 Far Horizons Lane, Asheville, NC 28803 (www.memorycare.org).
