A Memorial Celebration of Betty Lou Groover’s life will take place June 9, 2018, from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. at Hart's Mortuary at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road, Macon, Georgia 31210. Betty Lou Groover, 85, died peacefully, March 25, 2018 with her youngest and oldest two children, and son-in-law, close beside her. After a fall, she succumbed to pneumonia. Betty Lou sought beauty in nature, the fine arts, and diverse cultures. A graduate of Mount de Sales, she majored in drama at Virginia Intermont and Wesleyan Colleges. Jon Huston cast her in a speaking role in Wise Blood. She also acted in plays, played piano, and painted. Betty Lou earned a M.Ed., Mercer University, 1961; she taught English at Willingham High. Later, she taught male inmates at the Bibb County jail; fearless, she refused to allow the guards to accompany her into the prison classroom. At Macon College, she taught reading and writing for years. Betty Lou traveled the world and read voraciously. She always kept a beloved dog or cat nearby for comfort. Her vibrant presence and adventurous spirit will be missed by many. Betty Lou was preceded in death by her son, Michael Sean Groover. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Melissa Fletcher Keith (Stephen) of Marietta; her son, Duke R. Groover, Esq. (Catherine) of Macon; daughters Heather Groover Fernandez and Shannon Groover Stroobandt (Mike); and by her six grandchildren—Pearce, Noah, and Jacob Groover; Jennifer Fernandez Sawyer; Savannah and Isabelle Stroobandt—as well as by three great grandchildren.
