Born in Swainsboro, Georgia, Betty was the only child of the late Robert and Mary Josephine Law. During her childhood, the family moved to Macon and Betty graduated from Miller High School.
A woman of many talents, Betty worked as a telephone operator at Southern Bell Company, an insurance specialist at Internal Medicine Associates, and later on as a caterer and florist. Betty was an avid reader, often stating that she could “go anywhere through a book.”
At 19, Betty married the love of her life, Bob “B.L.” Addleton, and they were inseparable for nearly 67 years. During their years together, they enjoyed many common interests, including traveling, gardening, and watching Jeopardy every night. Together, they traveled to 49 states and many countries.
Betty was the proud mother of two children, Chris and Robin. She was actively involved in their activities growing up, volunteering as room mom, cheerleading coach, and serving alongside B. L. on the Parent Teacher Association at Jonesco Academy.
When Chris and Robin married, she embraced their spouses as children. One of the greatest joys of Betty’s life was being a grandmother. She played an active role in the grandkids’ nurture and care, making birthday cakes, attending sporting and academic events, and always ensuring they didn’t leave her house without a pocket full of snacks.
Betty and B. L.’s home, affectionately known as “The Hill,” was a peaceful haven for the entire family. They hosted every holiday, and she enjoyed planning the dinner menu and preparing delicious meals. Some of her favorite times were spent playing dominoes on the back porch, watching the grandkids swim in the backyard, and camping at Vogel State Park. In later years, Betty treasured becoming a great-grandmother.
Above all, Betty was a servant of God. Betty taught Sunday School to teenagers and young adults at Mikado Baptist Church and Tabernacle Baptist Church, keeping up with many through adulthood. She is currently a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Following the example of Jesus, she actively sought to meet the needs of those around her. She was quick to offer help with any household tasks, from organizing a kitchen to painting a new room. As an only child, Betty married into a large family with 14 children. She took care of the older siblings and their spouses as they aged, often staying in the hospital overnight and making weekly visits to the nursing home. Betty and B. L. also provided a “home away from home” for nephews on school breaks. Even in her final days, she held an active prayer and card writing ministry.
Betty will be remembered for her warm smile, witty remarks, and her devotion both to the Lord and her family.
Betty is preceded in death by her beloved son-in-law, Lindsey Crosby; and parents, Robert and Mary Josephine Law.
Betty is survived by her husband, B. L. Addleton of Macon, children Chris (Kay) Addleton of Cairo, Georgia, Robin Crosby of Macon; grandchildren, Amanda (Kevin) Lennon and Katie Crosby, both of Macon; Blake (Anne-Marie) Addleton of Evans, Georgia; Ben Addleton of Tallahassee, Florida; three great grandchildren, Jack, Carrington, and Luke Lennon of Macon; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
