Bert was born in Macon, Georgia, and was the son of the late William McKinley Ray and Eva Durden Ray. In addition to his parents, Bert is preceded in death by his beloved and cherished wife, Coreen O. Ray, son, Bert A. Ray Jr., and daughter, Tammy Ray Floyd. He is survived by his son, Robert “Bo” Andrews, Greensboro, North Carolina, daughter, Janet Ray Ward, Macon, Georgia, 12 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.
Bert was a loving husband and father. He grew up on Third Street, was a member of Second Baptist Church in Macon, and participated at Ridgecrest Camp in North Carolina for boys each summer. He attended Lanier High School, later receiving his GED and going into the National Guard at the age of 16. After two years, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, retiring as Master Sergeant in 1972. During his military career, he received the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He proudly served his country in the Georgia National Guard and the United States Air Force from 1949 to 1972. After his military retirement, he was employed by Pabst Brewery in Perry and later retired as a civil service employee at Robins Air Force Base. In his retirement years, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, woodworking, gardening, and gathering with high school friends each morning at Krystal or Burger King. In 2002, Central High School honored him as a Korean and Vietnam War Veteran, and he received his high school diploma from Lanier High School. In the last several years, Bert regularly watched Ingleside Baptist Church on television and attended in person on occasion. He loved his home in Milledgeville, enjoying many activities, playing Bingo, and resting in the sunshine.
