Bernard Eugene Harris

Macon- Bernard Eugene Harris, 78, of 2335 W. Marion Road, died peacefully with his loved ones at his side on Friday, February 27, 2009 at Heartland Hospice Center in Macon. The family will hold a visitation at Hart's Mortuary, 765 Cherry Street, on Sunday from 6:00PM until 8:00PM and will receive friends at 217 Providence Boulevard, Macon, GA 31210 (478-476-8436). Services will be held on Monday, March 2, 2009 at 11:00AM at Macon Evangelistic Church with the Reverends Gary Berrier and Lonnie Perdue officiating. A graveside service with Masonic rites will follow at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be made to Macon Evangelistic Church, 4500 Chapel Hill Drive, Macon, GA 31206 or to Heartland Hospice, 115 Arkwright Landing, Macon, GA 31210. Mr. Harris was born in Macon, GA on July 19, 1930. He graduated in 1949 from Lanier High School for Boys. Mr. Harris was a dedicated employee of Robins Air Force Base for more than thirty-seven years and served as an officer for the American Federation of Government Employees. He was presently the Job Superintendent for Roofing Done Right and Design Restoration. He is a former President of the Macon West Exchange Club, a fifty year member of Wohlin Masonic Lodge, and the former School Board Chairman of Chapel Hill Christian Academy. Mr. Harris is a member of Macon Evangelistic Church where he faithfully served as Chairman of the Deacons for fifteen years. He is a former member of Second Street United Methodist Church and a founding member of Wesley United Methodist church. Mr. Harris was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Lee Harris and Evelyn Campbell Harris, sister, Marceline "Mot" Harris, brother, Ernest Lee Harris, Jr. and two nephews, Michael F. Harris and David L. Harris, all of Macon. Mr. Harris is survived by his loving wife of fifty-eight years, Kathleen J. Harris of Macon; son and daughter-in-law, Todd H. Harris and Yvette D. Harris; daughter and son-in-law, Tara H. Matheney and Steven C. Matheney; grandchildren, Haydn D. Harris, Jonathan M. Matheney and Anna L. Matheney, who lovingly called him "Papa"; a nephew and his wife, Larry R. Harris and Debbie M. Harris, all of Macon. Mr. Harris is also survived by his Granddaughter of the Heart, Kelly H. Wright and her husband, Steve Wright, their sons, Jacob and Luke Wright, and his beloved friends, Kenneth and Alice Fields and Joe and Katie Vandiver. The family would also like to extend their deep gratitude to all of their friends and the staff of Heartland Hospice for all of the care and comfort Mr. Harris has received.
