Macon- Bernard A. ("Bernie") Bean, loyal son of his native Maine for 79 years, died at his Macon home January 25, 2010. Mr. Bean was born in Gorham, Maine, the son of Frank L. and Elizabeth Newcomb Bean and met his wife of 54 years, Lena Chapman Bean, while serving in the United States Air Force at Robins AFB. In addition to his wife, Mr. Bean is survived by a daughter, Dianne Barfield (Terry) of Powder Springs, son, Dr. Bernard A. Bean, Jr. (Amy) of Gray, and 8 grandchildren; Berry Barfield, Kristin Sorensen (Brian), Jessica, Rebecca, Rachel, Sarah, Hunter and Austin Bean.
Mr. Bean was the youngest of twelve brothers and sisters, all of whom predeceased him, and was a member of the Mayflower Society and Riverside United Methodist Church. He was retired from Robins Air Force Base.
He was a loving husband and grandfather, an avid hunter and fisherman, an excellent woodworker, a fine craftsman of ship models, a stamp collector and a regular attendee at the McDonald's coffee club and our family's only true "Mainiac".
Services will be held from Park Memorial United Methodist Church on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 10:30AM with the Reverends Cecil Hazen and Steve Albanese officiating. Burial will follow at Macon Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at Hart's Mortuary at the Cupola on Tuesday evening, January 26, from 6:00PM until 8:00PM. Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to the Martha McLeod UDC Chapter 559/UDC Scholarship, c/o Mrs. Judy Roberts, 6562 Highway 129, Abbeville, GA 31001.
