Barbara was born on August 9, 1932, in Rome, Georgia, to the late Robert Nicholas and Florence Thelma Gilliland Crawford. Barbara was married to Thomas David Clay for 60 years until his death in 2019. Along with raising her four children, she was a social worker in Macon, worked with Mrs. Helen Nolan as a wedding planner, and was the director of the daycare at Cherokee Baptist Church. During retirement, Barbara enjoyed traveling around the United States and to Japan to visit her children and grandchildren. She and Tom made many trips around the South with their Airstream trailer, always accompanied by their collie Sally.
Barbara volunteered at the Presbyterian Village for many years, and was an active member of First Presbyterian Church. She was an avid reader, and kept the local librarians busy with recommendations for new authors.
Barbara is survived by her children, Laurie Colestock (Dan), Thomas Clay, Jr (Kathleen), Crawford Clay (Andrea), and John Drew Clay; her eight grandchildren; her four great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Eleanor Mosteller, Liz Benton, Pete Crawford (Jan), and John Crawford. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her grandchild, Katrina Clay Burton; and her sister, Peggy Bagley.
