Mr. Byrd had a Bachelor's degree in English from Mercer University and a Master's degree in English Literature from the University of Georgia, as well as a J.D. degree from Mercer University. Mr. Byrd practiced real estate law in Saint Simons Island, GA for 28 years.

As a young man with an adventurous spirit, Mike chose to move abroad and teach English in Switzerland when was 24. His subsequent travels throughout Europe continued to hone his antiquarian sensibilities, and built what would later become a wealth of knowledge for his true passion of restoring homes. Always bold and ambitious, Mike started his own law practice and truly enjoyed helping meet the legal needs of his community. While Mike possessed an unquenchable desire to learn and absorb various other cultures, he was an anglophile at his core. Mike spent his later years traveling the world and soaking up as much of it as he could. He enjoyed poetry, classic literature, landscape architecture and Seinfeld. Although he was often and accurately described as a bon vivant, Mike remained grounded and could often be seen happily dining at the S&S Cafeteria with his son. Mike was a devoted, loving father and he will be missed by all those whose lives he touched.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Carson Cole Wilson and James Corde Wilson, III of Savannah; son, Mallary Bayne Byrd of Macon; mother, Sarah Ann Dixon Byrd of Macon; brother and sister-in-law, Dickey Byrd and Sandi H. Byrd of Macon; and former wife, Tip Cole Barfield of Macon.
