Aurel M. Erwin

July 14, 1915 — February 2, 2010

Macon- Aurel Maner Erwin, 94, died Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at his residence. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 3:00PM at First Christian Church. The family may be contacted at the residence. Contributions may be made to First Christian Church, 2306 Vineville Avenue, Macon, GA 31204. Aurel was born on July 14, 1915, Bastille Day, and felt he was destined to teach French. "I had no choice!" he quipped. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Mercer University, earned his Masters from Duke University, and attended language schools in Mexico City, Middlebury, VT, and Quebec, Canada. He also taught English and Spanish during his career, which included tenures at Georgia Military College, Lanier High School, Emory, Jr. and Emory, and Presbyterian College, Clinton, SC., from which he retired in 1977 after 23 years as French professor. Aurel loved to travel including touring the United States, going to plays, musicals, and French restaurants in New York, multiple trips to his beloved Paris, France, and many other countries in Europe, Central and South America, Australia, the South Pacific, India, and Egypt. He was a lover of opera, a member of the Metropolitan Opera Guild in New York, and made annual trips there, especially for his favorite Wagnerian operas, as well as trips to San Francisco opera, and opera houses in Europe. He was also a great fan of Greta Garbo and classic movies and their stars. Aurel had a "joie de vivre" seen in his personal charm, clever sense of humor, love of being a raconteur with wonderful stories, delight in serenading people with "La Vie En Rose," and deep love for his family and a wide circle of friends, including those who helped care for him in his final months of life, especially Andrea Gillespie. He loved his family home, affectionately called "Grand Hotel," where he was born and died in the same bed. Aurel was a long time member of the Macon Health Club. He was the oldest member and had a life-long commitment to First Christian Church in Macon and was proud that it was founded by his grandfather. We will miss him dearly, but in the words of the French national anthem, "le jour de glorie est arrive'!" Aurel was predeceased by his parents, Aurel M. Erwin, Sr. and Helen Pruyn Erwin, and his sisters, Helen Roosevelt Erwin Culpepper and Rennie Lenoir Erwin Sloan. Aurel is survived by his nieces and nephews, James David Sloan of Atlanta, Helen Sloan Randall (Richard) of Decatur, GA, Dr. Emily Erwin Culpepper ( Dr. Janet Lake) of Pomona, California and Dr. Joseph Aurel Culpepper (Ellen) of Bloomington, Illinois; eight great-nieces and nephews, Nathan Randall (Renae), Wanda Alexander (Jonathan), Casey Randall (Deborah), David Sloan, Amy Fike, Rennie Sloan, Teresa Carpenter (Chad), and Noah Culpepper (Nadia) and twelve great-great-nieces and nephews, Monica and Richie Randall; Andrew Fike; Drew, Alex and Chris Randall; Nona and Rennie Carpenter; Kiara, Lily, Joe and Zalma Culpepper.
