Anna Lynn Derthick Bush was born on April 15th, 1949, in Atlanta, Georgia to Roger Henry Derthick and Garnet Williams Derthick. Both parents were educators, and she followed in their footsteps. She grew up in the East Lake community of Atlanta and attended East Lake Elementary where her mother taught. She graduated from East Atlanta High School. Next, she went to Georgia State University where she received her bachelor’s degree in education. The family later moved to Macon, Georgia where she taught at Winship Elementary. She took advanced courses receiving a master’s degree from Mercer University and her T-6 Degree from Georgia Southwestern. At that time, she became the reading specialist at Weaver Middle School in Macon until her retirement.
