Allene Burns Griffin, age 91, of Macon, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family, Monday, September 16, 2024. The memorial will be a private ceremony remembering Allene in the presence of close family.
Allene was born in Ocilla, Georgia to the late Henry and Bessie Burns. She was a strong, independent woman who, with her husband, started a small dress store in 1966 on Gray Highway in Macon called Mode World. Later, Mode World became a corporation that started the following businesses: Man’s World, Fashion Mart, and The Uncommon Market. Mode World purchased and operated The Fashion Floor of the Joseph N. Neel department store in downtown Macon. It also purchased and continues to operate Barnes Furs. With all these businesses, Allene always placed being an amazing mother first. In her free time, she was a gourmet chef and an outstanding card player of any game. She loved spending time around her loving cats. Allene had a long and amazing life. She will be dearly missed.
In addition to her parents, Allene is preceded in death by her sister, Zelda B. Henderson; brother, Raymond Burns; and twin sister, Allowee B. Akin. She is survived by her husband of 71 years, James Shirley; and her son, Ben Griffin (Selina) of Macon.
