Alice Read Ligon Dalton passed away peacefully on March 25, 2025, at the age of 92. Born in Carthage, Tennessee, “Baby Alice” lived a life marked by dedication to her family, her faith, and her love of learning.
Alice graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1955 and married Martin L. Dalton, Jr., MD, on September 2, 1956. Together, they raised two daughters, Lucy Read Dalton and Virginia (Jenny) King Dalton Rankin, both of whom now reside in Atlanta, Georgia. A committed educator, Alice taught history and civics in Birmingham, Alabama, and later in Clinton, Mississippi, inspiring her students with her passion for the past and its lessons.
At age 60, Alice converted to Catholicism, a choice she embraced wholeheartedly, once saying, “I always knew I was a Catholic.” This spiritual milestone deepened her sense of purpose and complemented her lifelong interests. She loved reading, exploring history, and staying informed about current events, pursuits that enriched her days and those around her.
Alice leaves behind her daughters, Lucy and Jenny, her grandson, William Dalton Rankin, and cherished friends Doris Scales Dawson and Maria Gallegos. She was a devoted wife to Martin, a nurturing mother, a doting grandmother, and a steadfast friend. Her quiet strength, kindness, quick wit, and intellectual curiosity touched many lives, and she will be deeply missed.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, March 31, 2025, at Riverside Cemetery in Macon.
