Alda Alexander Harper

Alda Alexander Harper died Saturday, October 17, 2015. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at 3:30PM in the chapel of Hart's at the Cupola, with the Reverend Nancylee Cater officiating. A reception will follow. To celebrate and honor Mrs. Harper's life, she requested that friends wear festive colors. Memorial donations may be made to the donor's favorite charity. Mrs. Harper was the daughter of Collister Lee "Alec" Alexander, Jr. and Alda Patton Alexander. She met her beloved "Jopie", Joseph Wheeler Harper, Jr., in the sixth grade. They later married, and the union lasted 65 years, until his death in 2007. Mrs. Harper graduated Magna cum Laude and as valedictorian of the Wesleyan College Class of 1944. She received her PhD from the University of Maryland in 1974. Mrs. Harper was a member of Martha Bowman United Methodist Church and taught the Nan Freeman Sunday School Class. She was the Secondary Education Department Chair at Georgia College and State University. Mrs. Harper was an educator who taught all over the world, as she and her husband travelled due to his career in the U.S. Army. She loved spending time in the mountains and at the beach and was a paper tole artist. Mrs. Harper is survived by her daughter, Mary Elaine Barnard Methe (Randy) of Jones County ; son, George W. Harper (Wanda) of Murphy, North Carolina; daughter, Susie Harper Roberts of Macon; special friend and former daughter-in-law, Marie R. Harper of Tallahassee, Florida; 6 grandchildren: Scot Barnard of Gray, Joseph Harper of Washington, D.C., Warren Harper (Lacy) of Gainesville, Florida, Maria Andrews (Zack) of Durham, North Carolina, Alec Wilcher (Christyn) of Sumter, South Carolina, and Jordan Wilcher of Milledgeville; 9 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Joe Robert Alexander (Betty) of Macon; and a niece and nephew.
