Alberta “Bert” Whitaker Elliott, a pillar of strength and grace, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2024, at the age of 99 in Macon, Georgia. Born on May 23, 1924, in North Augusta, South Carolina, she was the cherished daughter of the late Albert G. Whitaker and Willimae Edenfield Whitaker. With a warm heart and radiant smile, Bert's presence enriched the lives of those around her. She was the beloved widow of James Marvin Elliott, Sr., sharing a life full of love and devotion until his passing.
Always one to embark on civic duties, Bert contributed her voice and efforts as a member of the League of Women Voters. She served as the Georgia Republican National Committeewoman from 1956-1960 and was the president of Bibb County Republican Women from 1979-1980. Her passion for nurturing beauty and fostering fellowship shone through her memberships in the Shirley Hills Morning Gardeners and the Idle Hour Country Club. Bert's zest for life, commitment to civic engagement, and unwavering support for her community shall remain her lasting legacy. Her memory will continue to flourish in the hearts of all who had the fortune to know her.
Bert will be lovingly remembered by her children, James M. Elliott, Jr. (Pat) of Macon, Ann Elliott Lovein (Hu) of Macon, and Kathy Slater (Ben) of New Orleans, Louisiana; grandchildren: Amy Morris (Rob) of Southlake, Texas, Ashley Elliott of Birmingham, Alabama, Emily Elliott of Birmingham, Alabama, Betsy Graycheck (Luke) of Watkinsville, Georgia, Anna Sharpton (Blake) of Macon, Kate Butler (Doug) of Macon, Katie Slater of New Orleans, Louisiana, Benjamin Slater (Mimi) of Dallas, Texas, and Elliott Slater of New Orleans, Louisiana; and great grandchildren: Ellie and Anna Claire Morris; Hudson, Olivia, and Ben Graycheck; Edie and Cam Sharpton; Grace and Lizzie Butler; Elle, Jack, and Beau Slater.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 26, 2024, in the chapel of Highland Hills Baptist Church, with Reverend Ethan Brown officiating. The family will greet friends starting at 1:30 prior to the service. Burial will be private at Riverside Cemetery.
