Betty (Swearingen) Hurdle

Betty Swearingen Hurdle, 89, of Macon, died Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at Pine Pointe Hospice House. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, April 6, 2019 at Mulberry Street United Methodist Church.  The family will greet friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wesleyan Disciples Program of Wesleyan College, 4760 Forsyth Rd, Macon, GA 31210 or Mulberry Street United Methodist Church, 719 Mulberry St, Macon, GA 31201.

Betty Geraldine Swearingen Hurdle was born in Vienna, Dooly County, Georgia on February 28, 1929. She was the 3rd of 4 daughters born to Rufus Darley Swearingen and Carrie Lee Vaughn Swearingen.  She was educated in the public schools of Dooly County and graduated from Berry College with a Business/English Education Degree.  She was an educator in Atlanta, Cordele, Moultrie, Waycross, and Macon, Georgia.  Her final teaching job was at Mt. De Sales Academy in Macon.

During her early life, she served in the United States Air Force Reserve at Dobbins Air Force Base.

She met the love of her life, William Hubert Hurdle, while he was preaching at Pleasant Valley Methodist Church in 1953.  They married quickly (2 months)!  To this union, four of God’s heavenly gifts were born, Harriet Rose, Caroline Walton, William Hubert, Jr., and John Lough.  

Betty was a faithful servant of the Lord!  She loved the arts! She loved her babies! She enjoyed traveling!  

Survivors include her daughters, Harriet Wade (Steve), Caroline Calvert (Mike); sons, William Hurdle, Jr. and John Hurdle: granddaughters, Tara Hobbs, Toni Weldon, Allison Dunlap, Kimberly Dixon, Kelley Fernandez, and Henderson Hurdle; and a host of great grandchildren and extended family members.
