Melvin "Chip" Yates, Jr., 76, of Macon, Georgia, passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2024.
Chip was born in Macon to the late Melvin Durwood Yates, Sr. and Mary Lee Justice Yates. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am, on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, in the Chapel of Hart's Mortuary on Cherry Street, with the Reverend Cile Mitchell officiating. The family will greet friends for a time of visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will immediately follow the service at Riverside Cemetery, 1301 Riverside Drive, Macon, Georgia.
Chip’s passion for fishing, water skiing, boating, and the great outdoors brought joy to himself and many others. As an Eagle Scout since 1960, he exemplified integrity and dedication. Chip holds a special place in history as a member of the inaugural class of men to graduate from Georgia College in Milledgeville, where he earned a BBA in management. Known by his ham radio call sign KD4VZA, he connected with others near and far. A skilled marksman, Chip served as captain of the rifle team in high school and proudly served his country in the US Navy during the Vietnam conflict. Chip's memory will forever inspire and endure in the hearts of those who knew him.
Chip is survived by his two children, Melvin "Trey" Yates, III and Allison Yates, both of Macon; and his granddog, Ranger. He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Pamela Ann Stanley Yates.
