Therese

Thérèse Irène Agathe LePage O’Connor died April 29, 2012, in Macon, Georgia, after a short illness. She was 94 years old, born on April 8, 1918, in Alfred, Ontario, Canada, to Elzire (née Charbonneau) and Joseph LePage. Her ancestors on the LePage side had been among the earliest French settlers in Quebec in the sixteenth century. Terry, as everyone called her, emigrated with her family to the United States when she was in second grade and grew up in Massena, New York, becoming a U.S. citizen. She remained fluent in French all her life and was delighted when Parisians could not quite place her “provincial” accent. She was married for 68 years to George Shepard O’Connor. After his retirement from Alcoa of America as a master machinist and toolmaker for thirty-nine years, they were very happy “snowbirds” for over thirty years, living winters in Bradenton, Florida, in a Kiwanis Park and summers in their beautiful home in Massena near the St. Lawrence River. During retirement, they traveled widely in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, until George’s death in 2004. Terry was an astute businesswoman, a talented artist and decorator, a canny card player, and a wonderful mother, wife, and homemaker. Both Terry and George strongly supported their three children’s education, all of whom earned advanced degrees (in music, pharmacy, and chemistry). She liked to argue religion with her son-in-law the philosopher (she was skeptical). She was preceded in death by her beloved son, George “Butch” O’Connor, who died tragically at the age of twenty-eight, and by her brother, Jean LePage, and sister, Alice Hiter. She is fondly remembered by her children, Bette-Lou (& Peter) Brown of Macon, Georgia, and John (& Denise) O’Connor of Andover, Massachusetts, and by her sister, Louise Giroux of Massena, New York, as well as by five grandsons (Scott and Joseph Brown; Eric, Ryan, and Liam O’Connor) and many nieces and nephews. She was the very proud great-grandmother of William Shepard Brown and Charlotte Alyce Brown (son and daughter of Joseph and Rebecca Claussen Brown of Tallahassee, Florida) and Benedicte Eloise Brown (daughter of Scott and Sally Anne Wilcox Brown of Jacksonville, Florida). Terry was a great beauty, who remained a striking woman to the end of her life. She knew how to be happy and desired the best for everyone. She is greatly missed. The family expresses appreciation to all the caregivers at the Blair House Senior Living Community for their kind support over the past two years. A private memorial service and interment will be in Massena, New York. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Methodist Church, 189 Main Street, Massena, New York, 13662, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
